Thermodynamic Steam Traps: High-Efficiency Drip Line Condensate Drainage

Continuous, rapid removal of condensate from main steam distribution headers is vital to prevent water hammer, steam degradation, and piping erosion. The Thermodynamic Steam Trap (Disc Trap) is a compact, robust valve specifically engineered for main steam line drip legs and tracer lines.

Operating on kinetic energy and fluid dynamics, the trap uses the velocity differential between high-density condensate and low-density flash steam to automatically discharge condensate while sealing tightly against live steam loss.

Working Principle & Operation

  • Opening Phase (Condensate Discharge): Cool, high-pressure condensate enters the inlet chamber. Its pressure lifts the central floating disc off its seat, allowing condensate to discharge rapidly through the outlet.
  • Closing Phase (Flash Steam Sealing): As hot condensate discharges, the pressure drop causes a portion of it to flash into steam. Flash steam travels at significantly higher velocities than condensate.
  • Dynamic Pressure Shift: Following Bernoulli’s principle, high-velocity flash steam creates a low-pressure area under the disc while accumulating high pressure in the control chamber above it. This pressure differential snaps the disc down onto its seat, trapping live steam inside the system.
